on the innate power of being human

It doesn’t have to be this way is really about the innate power we have, as human beings, to shape the world.

When we look around us at all of the chaos, destruction, violence, and corruption that fill our news feeds, it's really easy to get overwhelmed--to feel like, "there's really nothing I can do about that." So we become apathetic, or resigned to it: like, "Hey. the world's going to shit. What am I supposed to do?"

But what I'm trying to point to in the song is that a lot of the chaos we see is the result of human decisions. If we look at history, we see that we've inherited a world that has been shaped by the choices people made before us:  racism, sexism, wealth inequality, even environmental decline all have a lot to do with human decisions.

And we may not be able to do much about the past, but perhaps we can choose a better future.

things really don't have to be this way.
